Mina della Scala Castle
Built at the end of the 16th Century to welcome the noble family Schizzi during the Summer, it offers a wonderful landscape
It is located in the hearth of the Po Plain, on the border between Cremona’s and Mantua’s territory, in the ancient lands of the noble family Schizzi di Cremona who built it at the end of the 16th century as its Summer house.
The building at the beginning had a military purpose and it still maintains some elements of the castles of the previous age, with its towers, the big windows of the central part, the honour courtyard and back Italian-style garden developed around the side parts of the Castle.
On the sides of the honour courtyard were then added the warehouses with the two small little towers which close the castle’s courtyard. When the visitor enters the gate s/he jumps immediately back in another age.
In the Castle, the Counts Conti Schizzi enriched in the first half of the 18th century all the rooms with a lot of decorations and frescoes which are still perfect today.
When all the heirs of the Schizzi family died, the Castle became the house of the family Mina from Cremona (1859). This family, together with the noble family of the Counts Della Scala, still protects this building with its heirs, the Counts Persico Licer.
The Castle represents one of the most important and rare examples of ancient noble building in Cremona’s and Mantua’s territory. It is still inhabited and completely furnished with precious art-works, paintings, pottery and ancient objects. The entire building is extremely fascinating.
