Casalmaggiore: the most coveted. Because of its proximity to the river and its strategic position for river traffic control the city has always been the object of disputes between Milan, Mantua and Venice.
A town to discover on foot, walking through its streets, with its scenic historic centre, its small but precious museums, churches and palaces. You will need a car only to reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Fountain and the Church of Santa Maria dell'Argine. However, if you have a little more time on your hands, especially in spring or autumn, we truly recommend visiting these places on foot as it is little more than a half an hour walk along the tree-lined avenue to the Sanctuary and the Po bank up to Santa Maria.
The heart of Casalmaggiore beats in piazza Garibaldi on the "listone", the paved road in the centre of the square that every Saturday comes alive with the city market and the traditional fair dedicated to Saint Charles at the beginning of November.
Casalmaggiore has two museums: the Bijou Museum, a unique collection of local costume jewellery from the early 1900s to the present day and home to frequent and interesting temporary exhibitions, and the Diotti Museum, named after the Casalmaggiore painter Giuseppe Diotti, a leading figure in 19th-century Lombardy.
The Casalmaggiore's Duomo is in Neoclassical style, while the church of S. Chiara, in front of it, dates back to the 16th century.
The palaces Martinelli, Manara and Manganelli, the late 18th-century theatre, the Estense tower (what remains of the Renaissance fortifications) are all worth a walk in the city centre, one that ends with a visit to the 15th century shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Fountain and the Po river bank: it is from there that you can see all Casalmaggiore and the wide curve of the great river.
