At the centre of the Po valley, in a lavish countryside, stands Pizzighettone: one of the best preserved walled cities of Lombardy, whose origins are deeply linked to the river Adda, which still today cuts the historical centre in two
The Sixteenth-century city wall surrounding the old town is a defensive complex about 2 km long, 12 m tall and about 3.60 m thick. Even the Casemates deserve a visit: these are rooms with a barrel vault inside the walls, all linked together, unique throughout Europe.
The oldest church in the village is the Parish Church of St. Bassianus, in Romanesque-Lombard style, with paintings by Bernardino Campi and three fourteenth-century marble panels, while the tower of the Guado, featuring a square and crenelated plan, is the only integral testimony of the ancient castle, which in 1525 was the background of the imprisonment of Francis I of Valois, King of France.
Inside the Adda Sud Park and along the Serio Morto valley, you can take country paths and cycle paths to discover the whole area. We recommend seizing the opportunity and organising a trip to discover the surrounding area, either on foot or by bike or with a cruise on the Adda.
Among the best known and renowned dishes, the Fasulin de l'oc (black eyed peas) the star of a major eating contest between October and November in the Casematte, the Pizzighettone provolone cheese, the Pizzighettone biscuit and the salami of the walled city.
Due to the variety and value of historical-cultural attractions, the good quality of complementary services and the natural resources Pizzighettone received from the Italian Touring Club the recognition of the orange flag.
