The  ancient  Cremonese  art  of  working  woods  and  strings  that  emit  extraordinary  musical  notes,  instead,  was  inserted  in  a  collateral  list,  that  of  the  immaterial  world  heritage  to  be  protected.
The  violin  making  profession  began  to  develop  in  Cremona  in  the  sixteenth  century.  Whole  families,  including  that  of  Antonio  Stradivari,  focussed  in  the  manual  work  of  the  workshop,  producing  refined  and  unique  pieces,  and  passing  from  father  to  son  the  in-depth  knowledge  of  materials  and  processing  techniques. 

Even  today,  the  tradition  requires  that  the  crafting  of  violins  should  be  made  exclusively  by  hand,  with  naturally  seasoned  wood  and  that  under  no  circumstances  parts  of  industrial  origin  should  be  used.  Only  by  following  this  procedure  it  is  possible  to  respect  the  traditional  Cremona  violin  making  art  and  guarantee  an  exceptional  acoustic  output.  Every  detail,  even  the  ones  that  look  just  like  ordinary  decorations  have  their  value  and  meaning  in  the  making  of  the  violin.

Over  150  luthier  shops,  every  day,  renew  the  tradition  of  the  great  masters  of  the  past;  next  to  the  shops,  an  international  school  trains  new  violin  makers  while  the  Violin  Museum  preserves  ancient  pieces  of  extraordinary  value
